How to make a BIG difference with one small change?
In the past 10 years we have surrendered to cutbacks. Yet we move forward and make the best of each day because we are passionate about learning and we find purpose and pleasure in each day. The concept of Learning Commons needs to be practical and we must exercise a healthy mind-set. Some people will welcome change and contribute, some will listen and watch, others with remain doubtful and cautious. We must focus on our strengths and interests and collaborate with those who are ready to try something new.
We need to look amongst ourselves and build relationships amongst 'like-minded' people. Casual dialogue and invitations to 'new' opportunities. In this space and time one small group can make a big difference. Two facilitators of learning can work together and address the concept of a Learning Commons and address student's needs as an extension to the library and classroom. When true heart and practices are shared and celebrated amongst the community, an infectious desire to explore, collaborate and build will ripple out.
We need to think beyond 'closed libraries' and lay the foundation for Learning Commons in our school communities. This mind shift lends itself to a stronger body of advocates who will speak to the needs and invested interests of learners in the 21st Century. Once the foundation has set and the scaffolding has been secured, evidence of success must be shared though documentation and digital portfolios.
As observers witness the true benefits of collaboration, desire and mind-set will change one step at a time.
